Mark Haley

Mark Haley

Director of Training & Instruction

Mark Haley is the former manager of the South Bend Silver Hawks, having led the team from 2005-2014. During that time, he was named manager of the year in the Midwest League in 2005, 2008 & 2013. He was Player Development Man of the Year for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005 and was the first recipient of the Joe Garagiola Jr. Award for excellence in player development for the Diamondbacks in 2008. While at the helm, his teams were able to work themselves into the play offs 8 of the 10 years and won one Midwest League Championship and three Eastern Division championships. Early on, Haley was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 26th round of the 1977 amateur draft but instead chose to attend the University of Nebraska to play ball while earning his degree in education. He started coaching at UNL as an assistant from 1982-86. He also coached in the summer for the Alaska League and the Jayhawk League. He then became a recruiting coordinator and interim head coach while at the University of Tennessee (1987-91). He spent over a decade in the Chicago White Sox organization as a coach. He was with the South Bend White Sox (1991-1992), Sarasota White Sox (1993), Hickory Crawdads (1994), Venezuela League (1994) South Bend Silver Hawks (1995), Prince William Cannons (1996), and Winston-Salem Warthogs (1997), where he managed for 49 games. Returning to coaching, he was at Winston-Salem (1999, 2001-2002), with the Birmingham Barron’s (2003) and the Great Falls White Sox (2004) before joining the South Bend Silver Hawks. Throughout his coaching career, Haley has worked with over a hundred and twenty major league players.

Doug Buysse

Hitting & Catching Instructor

In addition to coaching catchers and hitters at the collegiate level, Doug Buysse has traveled throughout the Midwest as a baseball camp instructor, making appearances at Silver Spikes, Top 96, and College Coaches Skills Camps. He played for four years at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he holds a career .351 batting average and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage as a back-up catcher. Buysse is currently the head baseball coach at Washington High School in South Bend.

John Coddington

John Coddington

Softball/Baseball Throwing Mechanics Specialist

John Coddington has more than 40 years of experience in teaching throwing mechanics, injury care and prevention, and pre and post- surgical rehabilitation. He is a NATA board-certified athletic trainer, an Indiana-licensed athletic trainer and has attended numerous clinics and seminars relating to throwing mechanics and injuries to the throwing athlete. John was voted Athletic Trainer of the Year in the Clinical and Professional Division by the Indiana Athletic Trainer’s Association in 1989 and was also inducted into the Indiana Athletic Trainer’s Association Hall of Fame in 2001. He was inducted into the Ball State Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor in 2008. Coddington is a 1976 graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in physiology and health science with a specialization in athletic training and sports medicine.

Carlos Ferrá

Carlos Ferrá

Hitting & Infield Instructor

Carlos Ferrá has coached baseball for over 18 years, and is a physical education and Spanish teacher in the South Bend schools. In his native country of Cuba, Ferrá coached youth, high school and collegiate level baseball. He studied in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba at Nancy Uranga University and majored in baseball with a master’s degree in physical culture and sports. Several of his students play at the professional level in the United States and Mexico. Ferrá specializes in teaching professionally minded students between the ages of 11 to 18 and is adept at training any position.

Kevin Gray

Strength & Conditioning Instructor

 

Kevin Gray graduated from John Adams High School where he was named a Metro All-Star and was two-time All Conference. He played baseball at Holy Cross College and was named team MVP in his second season after having a batting average of over .400. Kevin is an International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Certified Personal Trainer and is currently an assistant baseball coach at John Adams High School.

CURT HASLER

Curt Hasler

Pitching Advisor

Curt Hasler has been teaching the mechanics of baseball for nearly 25 years as both a coach and an instructor. His skills as a ballplayer were developed while in the minor leagues, having played for multiple ball clubs in the Chicago White Sox franchise after he was drafted in 1987. (Hasler spent the 1988 season in South Bend as a pitcher for the South Bend White Sox). In 1991, he transitioned his career to pitching coach, moving throughout the White Sox organization. He is currently a Pitching Coordinator for the Chicago White Sox.

Earl Keith

Advanced Softball Instructor

As the 2014 Northern Indiana Conference Softball Coach of the Year, Earl Keith brings a wealth of teaching talent to the Performance Center. Keith has been the head coach of the St. Joseph High School Indians softball team since 2005. Prior to that, he led the St. Joe Indian’s baseball team, coached ICCL softball and baseball, men’s competitive travel fastpitch softball, as well as the Michiana Scrappers travel baseball team. He received a degree in business management from Ball State University.

Kyle Kolat

Strength & Conditioning Coach

Kyle Kolat graduated from Riley High School in South Bend where he was a two-sport athlete, playing baseball and football. He was recruited to play baseball by Lincoln Trail Junior College in Robinson, IL. After two years, Kyle accepted an offer to play at Milligan College in Johnson City, TN, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Performance, Exercise Science and Sports Management. Kyle conducted his sports management internship at the Salvation Army Kroc Center. Kyle has taught at multiple baseball camps and served as a personal trainer. He has been helping amateur athletes excel in their chosen sport since 2008, but his true love and passion is baseball. What he enjoys most is working out and taking a player’s skills to the next level.

Walter Lehmann

Pitching & Hitting Instructor

A graduate of Marian High School and Bethel College in Mishawaka, Walter Lehmann is an exceptional trainer, specializing in catching, pitching, and infielding. Currently, the assistant baseball coach at Marian High School, Lehmann is also an assistant coach for the South Bend Junior Silver Hawks. Every summer, he serves as a camp instructor for multiple University of Notre Dame and Bethel College summer camps.

Pitching & Hitting Instructor

Steve Roeder graduated from Penn High School where he was an Indiana North All Star and First Team All-State pitcher. In 1988 he was drafted out of high school as a pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates and went on to pitch for the Atlanta Braves until 1992.  Steve returned to Mishawaka to teach pitching mechanics to local high school players. Currently a Mishawaka Police Officer, he continues to coach youth baseball and offers pitching and hitting instruction to players of all ages.

Kyle Richardson

 Hitting & Outfield Instructor

Kyle is a graduate of the Univeristy of Notre Dame where he was a four year monogram winner in baseball, playing in 164 career games. While at Notre Dame, Kyle played in both the Big East and ACC, receiving academic honor roll recognition in both conferences. His career was also highlighted by playing in the Northwoods League and the New England Collegiate Baseball League where he was selected for the All-Star team. Over his career Kyle was known for his defensive excellence in the outfield as well as being a player with good tools. He finished his career with a .989 fielding percentage and 10 outfield assists, 7 of which came during his senior season.  His belief is that it is not only important to be a complete baseball player, but also a complete person, therefore baseball and life success starts with the mental game.

Joey Lange

Joey Lange graduated from Clay High School in South Bend and currently plays for Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. He has received many recognitions over the course of his baseball career including NIC’s Most Valuable Player. Joey has led many instructional camps for young players and he’s an experienced youth baseball coach. His training process begins with fundamentals and extends all the way through to the mechanical building blocks that create a dynamic athlete.
